If Monsignori is the history of the island, Cuvée Gerontampelo is the “visionary” masterpiece of Estate Argyros. The name literally means “Old Vine” in the local Santorini dialect. This is a very special, small-production bottling that seeks to combine the raw, volcanic power of the island’s oldest vineyards with the refined elegance of French oak.The grapes are hand-selected from centenarian vines in the villages of Pyrgos, Megalochori, and Episkopi. Unlike many other Argyros labels that stay purely in stainless steel, Gerontampelo is fermented and aged in French oak barrels. The result is a wine of imposing proportions: deep lemon color, a nose of ripe citrus and white flowers integrated with noble wood, vanilla, and toasted nuts, all backed by that signature Santorini “saltiness.” On the palate, it is full-bodied, rich, and incredibly structured.
